Biography

M. Sechin Tower grew up in Seattle, Washington where he watched far too many after-school cartoons, godzilla movies, and pro-wrestling broadcasts. He began role-playing games when he was seven years old— lacking the “weird dice” he had seen others using, he taped together monopoly dice in an attempt to improve the randomization. Since then, he has increased his collection of dice as well as his knowledge of statistics.

Between the ages of fifteen and twenty-five, Sechin visited Japan, bicycled through Scotland and England, studied in China, graduated from Carleton College in Minnesota, and earned his teaching certificate from Central Washington University. After that, he rolled up his sleeves and got to work.

Sechin has been a writer and a teacher for the better part of a decade. In 2010 he was promoted from contract writer to lead developer of Exile Game Studio. He now lives and writes in Everett, Washington with his lovely wife and two very spoiled cats.

What’s with the weird name?

“Sechin” is a Mongolian name meaning “Wise Counselor.” It was once a title given to Genghis Khan’s military and spiritual advisors.

Says Sechin Tower:
“I think my parents tried to play it safe by hiding the strange name in the middle where no one would see it, but somehow it always fit me best. I remember the first day of kindergarten when the teacher asked me which name I wanted to go by, and the question threw me into deep inner conflict. On the one hand, I thought entering school meant I was a growing up, so I should use my grown-up name, Marshall, to show seriousness and responsibility. But on the other hand, Sechin represented all that was unusual and creative about me. It seems like such a small thing, but to this day I believe it was the most important decision of my life. If I ever meet the version of me from the parallel universe where I decided on the other name, I bet he’ll be wearing a gray flannel suit and a black necktie.”
